Most custom hoodies end up at the back of a drawer. Here's how to design one that ends up in regular rotation.

Start with the blank, not the print

Ink is pushed through a mesh screen, one color at a time, into the fabric. It bonds with the fibers, lasts the life of the garment, and looks the way most people picture a printed hoodie. The catch is setup: each color in the design needs its own screen, so a four-color print on twelve hoodies has the same setup cost as a four-color print on twelve hundred — the per-unit price drops dramatically as you scale.

When to choose embroidery

Embroidery feels premium and lasts forever. It's the right call for logos under 4 inches, especially left-chest placement on corporate or team merch. Avoid embroidery for fine type under about 0.25 inches tall, gradient artwork, or anything photographic — none of those work well in stitching.

Use vector files when you can

Vector formats (AI, EPS, SVG, and high-resolution PDF) scale cleanly to any size without losing sharpness. Raster formats (PNG, JPG) need to be at least 300 DPI at the actual print size. A logo file pulled from a website at 72 DPI will print blurry every time.

Placement that respects the garment

Hoodies have a pocket and seams that limit where art can sit cleanly. Center-chest art should stop about 3 inches above the pocket. Full-back prints should leave room above the hem and below the hood seam. Sleeve prints work best between the shoulder seam and the elbow. Sizing and care

When you're ordering for a group, build the size run on the wide side — 'true to size' often misses bigger frames at the top of the curve. A common starting distribution is roughly 10% S, 25% M, 30% L, 25% XL, 10% 2XL+, but adjust based on your audience.

Care matters more than people admit. Wash cold, inside out, tumble dry low or hang. That single change extends the life of a printed hoodie by years. Avoid bleach and fabric softener — both break down inks and fibers.
